How music works on YouTube Shorts
- The format. Shorts are vertical videos of up to 3 minutes, watched in the Shorts feed, on channel pages and in YouTube search.
- Where creators find your sound. In the Shorts camera, creators tap Add sound and search for the track, or open a Short that uses it, tap the sound and choose Use this sound. Either way the Short links to the sound, and the sound's page lists other Shorts made with it.
- Audio added outside YouTube. A song mixed into the video in another editor may not link to your sound, so viewers can't tap through to it.
- Content ID and length. YouTube says Shorts longer than 1 minute with an active Content ID claim are blocked. If your track is in Content ID, ask for Shorts of a minute or less.
- How views are counted. Since March 31, 2025, YouTube counts a Shorts view each time a Short starts or replays; the older measure appears as “engaged views” in YouTube Analytics.
What to put in your Shorts brief
- Ask creators to add your track inside YouTube (Add sound or Use this sound) so each Short links to it.
- Keep the sound fully audible with no voice-over. That is a Sound.me rule for every video, and videos that break it aren't paid.
- Ask for 60 seconds or less if your track has Content ID.
- Pick a direction: creative freedom, lip sync, dance, transition, text on screen or your own brief. Creative freedom fills fastest; a detailed brief can take creators longer.
- Keep text and faces in the middle of the frame, clear of the title, channel name and buttons at the bottom and right.
Running a Shorts campaign
At checkout, choose YouTube Shorts and paste the YouTube link to your sound; the whole campaign runs on Shorts, so run a separate one if you also want TikTok or Instagram Reels. Set the budget and a run time of 72 hours, 7 days or 14 days, target channels by age, gender, language, creator size (from 100 followers to over 50 million) and location (worldwide, one of 24 countries, or a region), and add up to 3 YouTube creators whose Shorts you like so Sound.me can find similar channels.
Sound.me's team matches and approves the creators on Shorts campaigns (approving creators yourself is a TikTok feature, from $1,000) and watches every Short before it is paid. Sound.me doesn't license music: you promote a sound that is already on YouTube. Every step in detail.
What to expect
| Budget | Projected views | Creator videos |
|---|---|---|
| $250 | ~211K | ~38 |
| $500 | ~332K | ~75 |
| $1,000 | ~524K | ~151 |
| $1,500 | ~685K | ~226 |
These projections are measured on TikTok campaigns (worldwide, 7 days; average of real completed Sound.me campaigns created since January 1, 2026). YouTube Shorts results may differ: the table is a starting point, not a forecast for YouTube Shorts, and Sound.me doesn't guarantee views, streams or sales.
Shorts view counts follow YouTube's own counting (above), so compare them with other Shorts rather than with TikTok or Reels numbers. Creators keep their Shorts up for at least 45 days; if one comes down earlier, contact us for a replacement.
